Yep, late this past week it seems the "3133T h@x0r d00dz" released several exploits against the MS JPEG vulnerability (MS8), and that while these weren't of the highest quality, others are taking them and improving upon them. If you haven't patched recently, you should!

Unless, of course, you want your PC to be used as a spam spewer, or as a WarezHouse, or a provider of pr0n...

I recommend using a firewall when connected to the internet.

For Windows boxen: ZoneAlarm

If you have Windows XP, use Windows Firewall at the least.

I also recommend closing ports using Shields UP:

I recommend not letting your kids use the computer to access the internet Smile

ZoneAlarm: got that. Has problems w/ TrendMicro A/V, but it works. I use the WinXP ICF (firewall) at work, it's better than nothing -- but not by much, IMHO.

Haven't used Shields UP -- heard some reports on the InfoSec lists about false positives, that it is best used to demonstrate that you need a firewall. Gibson also has a somewhat strange rep -- don't know whether to trust him or not.

As an interesting sidenote...I finally upgraded to SP2...and the system runs a whole lot better for some reason...even ZA and AVG run smoother and quicker...
