Note: re-posted from the MMF Hall of Humiliation by permission

There were reports that Lycos (at least, in Europe) launched a new "weapon" in its war on spamm and spammers: they made available a screen saver which, when activated, would become part of a massive DDoS attack against websites which were found to be guilty of spamming.

Fortunately, the anti-spamm community in general did NOT embrace this dangerous escalation in the ongoing war between spamm and the Internet. And, as of this morning, it is reported that the site (page) is down.

Yippee. I am glad to hear that, because as much as I hate spamm (especially MMF spamm) I don't want to see the Internet self-destruct in a massive display of ain-at-your-foot-and-shoot-yourself-in-the-head. DDoS and other such techniques are irresponsible, quite possibly criminal, and very, verrrry stupid -- whether done by the Black Hats, the White Hats, or those who choose to go hatless. When the Good Guys start doing Bad Things, they become indistinguishable from the Bad Guys. And this is never a Good Thing.

Agreed. We (tinw) should not fight abuse with abuse.

Yep. That leads to one-uppance and brinksmanship, which could well bring us to the abyss of a total Internet meltdown.

With so many spending so much time on the Internet...would that be such a BAD thing? It certainly would cause some people to have to change their lifestyles and start talking with their family again...

Twisted Evil

Just playing a little devil's advocate here...

The internet is a good thing. We (tinw) don't want it to go away.

Yep. Especially if some of the process/device control systems (e.g. the computers which control the valves on the dams, or the stuff controlling the power grid) get clobbered.

And a lot of banks are on the internet.

Do you want your bank's computer system to get clobbered? Just try to hit your ATM or do a teller withdrawal.

Ahhh.....

1. Any dam which is hooked up on the internet is dumb in my view...

2. I do not use an ATM. I see my bank people in person...and even if the computers are down, I do not have a problem getting the money in or out.

Smile

1) True. However, there are quite a few process control networks which are accessible from the Internet. Just because it's dumb (even in MY view) doesn't mean it isn't happening...

2) I do, sometimes. And, when MS-Blast took down the banking ATM networks, I think it got to some of the back-end systems (by DoS-ing the routers and switches) which would pretty much cripple the bank's operations -- even the tellers.

As with TV, radio, books, video games, or any other distraction, it falls on the user to monitor/ration their use/consumption appropriately.
