I haven't personally tried mailwasher. However, I do have several layers of defense against spam, which are:

1) My ISP uses Postini to filter out various types of UCE (hate mail, sexually-oriented stuff, GetRich Quick! offers, general junk),

2) and I also use the built-in filtering present in my mail client (Thunderbird) to help clean the stuff up.

3) Also, before the recent increase, I would take "interesting" examples of the spam I received, and skewer them on this website for my own and others' amusement. However, the recent crops of crap aren't too much fun to ridicule.

Oddly enough, the amount of spam I received jumped dramatically after the passage of the (You) CAN-spam act at the Federal level.

Not to be a PITB (pain in the butt) but SPAM in all capitals is a licensed trademark of Hormel. Spam is what you're talking about.

I recommend having two email addresses.

1) Your real email address. This one will NOT be given away to anyone except to those you trust. I recommend getting a mail.com address for it has lots of domains (like playful.com, consultant.com, etc.) which are not targetted by spammers.

2) a second email address for "offers" and other stuff. Use this to sign up for things that require an email address, and just let it get spammed to death.

3) Get a despammed.com email address which redirects to your real email address, and use that for posting on message boards, newsgroups, public places, etc. www.despammed.com

Agreed. I edited the original post and changed the title.

Actually, if you have the ability to control the creation of email aliases, I would suggest you use the aliases vs. actual mailboxes. Then simply route stuff from Alias #2 into a "possible spam" folder for review.

Also, I would suggest creating a "spamtrap" alias. This is NEVER used for legit email, but is posted on web board etc. along with a warning "if you send me email at this address, I will blacklist you forever." Then, do it.

The sad thing is that there is absolutely NO FOOLPROOF method to avoid Spam...except to not have an email address...and that would be no fun at all...

Un, Neal -- those are strange avatars/signature graphics. Think that Angelfire has done something here.
