OK, I am not one to believe in conspiracy theories when it comes to Big Oil, but...

I am more than a bit preturbed by the spike in crude prices (and the associated spike in gasoline prices.) I just paid $2.00 (actually $1.999, but then what is a tenth of a penny between friends?) for gas. NealT mentioned on his recently-departed web site that it was strange that oil and gas were so high, as we are in a fairly mild winter (that is, unless you were in one of the areas where winter was anything BUT mild!) Of course, the fact that the Chinese economy is heating up, and they have a thirst for oil that will make the rest of the planet (us included) look like a teetotaller, might have something to do with it...

Well, I know there are market forces driving the price of oil, but I can certainly understand WHY folks might think that Big Oil was in collision to keep prices high. Especially when the C-levels are reaping outrageously high rewards, while "resources" get "smart-sized" or "off-shored".

Well, as an example, gas prices at the beginning of Winter for me were at an all-time high of $1.69 a gallon. Just yesterday, they raised the price once again to $2.09 a gallon. I, for the life of me, cannot see how the cost could have gone up $.40 a gallon in just a few months...

This year, I got my biggest raise ever. Gas prices have eaten it up plus some.

Sad

It really is a function of the markets. China is developing a MAJOR thirst for the black sticky stuff (oil, that is... black gold, Texas Tea...), and so they are putting major pressures on the supply. At the same time, the rantings of Sr. Chavez (the increasingly paranoid kook who is the President of Venezuela) may be causing some jitters, thus putting additional upward pressures on price. One of the things the markets fear is uncertainty, and Chavez's flip-flopping on his relationship w/ the USA isn't helping.

Amazing though, that each of these issues causes gas to jump $.08 a gallon or more each time...

Makes one wonder...

Well, you can expect another bump in prices, thanks to the explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City...

You are right too...up .07 a gallon this morning. That's over 30 cents a gallon in the last 2 weeks alone...

The good news is, crude is coming down -- we may see some drop in prices in the next few weeks (I hope.)

Refineries are operating at 95%+ levels for the last two years.

They can't build more due to all those environmental regulations.

And, they are deferring scheduled maintenance to keep them running at that level. That means that, when (not if) they break down, it will take longer to fix, and likely will disrupt the supply more.

Now, don't go thinking they are an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen. The refiners know they can't survive a major incident, so that maintenance is going on as before.

Wait. Are they deferring maintenance or are they doing it as before? Your statement seems to say both.

I would guess they would have to do maintenance that is unscheduled....

They are not going to defer preventative maintenance that, if not done, would result in a high risk of a catastrophic "event". However, they are likely deferring maintenance where the risk of such an incident is lower. Otherwise, they face accusations of "holding back" supply in order to drive the price up.

Understand, this is opinion based on publicly-reported information, not the result of special "insider" knowledge.

They're in a no-political-win situation. If they do delay maintenance they risk hurting supply. If they don't they get accused of "holding back"

Oh well. At least the money's good now Smile

Yeah, but with the price of gas coming down, it isn't necessarily going to continue that way. Also, remember that us worker-bees in the oil patch have to pay for gas and other stuff too, and our pay is not going up at the rate the price of gas was.

OK, the money's good now....for the refinery companies for the time being.
